Before you start
Check the device, storage, and download source before changing Android settings.
- AndroidAndroid 9 or newer
- GPUAdreno 730+ or Adreno 8xx, based on the published 0.4.0 requirement
- Runtime spaceAbout 3 GB, plus extra space for Steam, components, and games
- Download sourceOfficial Droid-Deck GitHub Releases only
- RootNot required
Check the supported-devices guide if the GPU model or Android version is uncertain.
Download and install the APK
- Where
- Official GitHub Releases in your browser, then Android's download notification or file manager.
- Do this
- Open the 0.4.0 application release and choose
DroidDeck-0.4.0.apkunless you have a verified reason to use an alternative package identity. - Android prompt
- If Android blocks the file, allow APK installation for the browser or file manager that opened this download. Do not disable device-wide security protections.
- Expected result
- DroidDeck appears in the Android app launcher and opens to its setup interface.
Install the Linux runtime
- Where
- Press Play when the runtime is missing, or open Setup and find Linux runtime.
- Do this
- Start the runtime installation, keep the app open, and allow the download, verification, and extraction stages to finish.
- Space
- Allow About 3 GB. The current catalog download is 790.9 MB / 754.3 MiB, but the installed environment needs more room.
- Expected result
- Setup shows an installed runtime version instead of Not installed. The current catalog was r9 when checked October 14, 2026.
Disable the child-process limit
Steam starts many child processes. DroidDeck requires this Android limit to be disabled before a Steam session can start reliably. The setting label differs across Android versions and vendor ROMs.
Use Developer options
- Open DroidDeck Setup and select Fix it, then open Developer options when prompted.
- If the setting says Disable child process restrictions, turn it on.
- If the setting says Restrict child processes, turn it off.
- Keep Developer options enabled afterward when DroidDeck warns that the switch otherwise resets.
- Return to DroidDeck and choose Check again.
Expected: Setup reports that the child-process limit is off and Steam sessions can start.
Use Fix it for me
- On the first-launch gate, choose Fix it for me. In Setup, the equivalent action is Fix it or Use Wireless debugging.
- Open Android Developer options, then Wireless debugging, then Pair device with pairing code.
- Enter the pairing pop-up IP address and port plus its six-digit code in DroidDeck.
- After pairing, confirm the Wireless debugging connection IP address and port shown by Android.
- Choose Turn limit off and wait for DroidDeck to verify the result.
Expected: DroidDeck reports Child-process limit updated or shows the limit as off.
Computer ADB is the app's last-resort option. This guide does not invent or publish an unverified ADB command.
Launch Steam for the first time
- Where
- DroidDeck's Play action after the runtime and child-process checks are ready.
- Do this
- Press Play and keep the device online while Valve's ARM64 Steam client downloads. The first launch can take a few minutes.
- Enter the Steam account only inside the Steam client displayed by DroidDeck. This guide never asks for Steam credentials.
- Expected result
- The Steam Big Picture / Steam Deck interface opens and shows the signed-in library.
Check that setup worked
A successful setup is based on observable app and client states, not on one game launching.
- Setup shows the Linux runtime as installed or up to date.
- The child-process limit is shown as off or not applicable.
- Steam reaches its interface and accepts the account sign-in.
- Closing one unsupported game does not by itself mean the base installation failed.
If installation fails
Record the DroidDeck version, Android version, GPU, installed runtime version, child-process status, and the last visible stage. Change one item at a time.
Official reports go to the DroidDeck Discord bug-report forum with the scrubbed ZIP from Share logs.
DroidDeck installation FAQ
Does installing DroidDeck require root?
No. The official 0.4.0 README says root is not required.
Why does DroidDeck install a Linux runtime?
The Android APK is the launcher and setup app. Steam and the local game compatibility stack need the separate Linux runtime.
Why do Android devices show different child-process setting names?
Android versions and vendor ROMs expose the same restriction in different ways. Turn off Restrict child processes, or turn on Disable child process restrictions. The intended result is that the limit is disabled.
What if the child-process switch is missing?
Use DroidDeck's Fix it for me flow over Android Wireless debugging. The app guides pairing and applies the setting locally. Computer ADB is documented only as a last resort.
What is different about the first launch?
Steam downloads on the first Play. Later sessions reuse the installed client unless an update or repair action requires another download.
Do I need a PC to finish setup?
The standard flow does not require a PC. On Android builds without the switch, DroidDeck uses Wireless debugging on the same device.
